Social media provides a huge platform for education, interaction, brand awareness, and more. If you are a retail dietitian, social media needs to be on your radar. Even if your retailer and/or private brands have Twitter handles and a presence in the variety of social media sites, it’s important that you as a professional have your own handle to build your brand, help your target audience know who you are and what you stand for, and to interact with fellow professionals both in and out of the retail space. Here is some food for thought to consider if you haven’t already joined the conversation.
According to the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) analysis of 2005 data, just over 27% of the adult U.S. population ate veggies three (3) or more times a day, and under 33% ate fruit more than twice a day – so most are not meeting the recommendations for good health.* This means many people are not only missing out on the nutrition fruits and vegetables offer, but on loads of flavor as well!
The hot days of summer are a cool time to refresh and hydrate, taking advantage of seasonal favorites from berries to watermelon! For about 60 calories per serving and loads of nutrients from eyesight assisting Vitamin A (orange colored choices) to heart smart potassium (cantaloupe, sweet cherries, melon, kiwi, etc), fruit can’t be beat as a nutritional sweet treat. From appetizer to dessert, here are some fresh ways to keep cool fresh from the produce department!
Salsa is a favorite for getting vegetables – and fruit – on the menu. It’s easy to prepare since it’s typically a “no cooking required” kind of dish. The classic spicy flavors of salsa get a sweet twist with grapes! If eating seafood twice a week for health benefits is on your resolution list, try these tasty fish tacos. They come together easily, use a mild fish that the family will like, and the familiar taco will make it easy to please. Check out the veggie toppings too – it’s a simple way to make sure some vegetables get into the meal. Look for taco shells made with whole grains and/or fiber, or use soft shell for less fat.
